On Wednesday, December 10, Mal Ciputra management held a press conference to launch it’s charity Christmas program, “A Gift to Give”.

Rainbow Reading Garden’s founder, Nila Tanzil, the general manager of Mal Ciputra, Ferry Irianto, A Gift to Give’s ambassador, Olga Lydia, along with reporters from various media outlets were present at the launch.

“The alarming rate of illiteracy and lack of good quality children’s books in Eastern Indonesia were one of the many reasons Mal Ciputra created the ” Gift to Give” program,’ says Irianto. “It’s a call to action for people to give to the less fortunate. (We believe) one person can make a change. The more people create change, the larger the impact towards a better future.”

For the “A Gift to Give” program, Mal Ciputra has made 2 penny banks to be sold and distributed. Hundreds of nutcracker shaped penny banks will be sold for Rp 200.000 and the proceeds will be donated to Taman Bacaan Pelangi. Hundreds of tin penny banks will also be distributed to children in schools for free.

The children are expected to fill the penny banks and once it’s full, they will drop it off at a giant nutcracker penny bank located at Mal Ciputra. The idea behind this to cultivate a child’s empathy to the less fortunate children.

Olga Lydia, the ambassador of the program is no stranger to Taman Bacaan Pelangi’s cause. Olga and a group of amazing individuals behind Books for Hope, helped Taman Bacaan Pelangi provide books to the library located at the Komodo National Park.

“Donating books is one thing but maintaining libraries need continuous efforts and commitment of various parties. The prices of goods and services in Eastern Indonesia is very expensive, we need to help them in any way we can,” says Olga.

The program aims to raise enough funds to build more libraries and renovate existing libraries. “A Gift to Give” starts from December 9th to January 3rd 2016 but we hope more successful collaborations between Mal Ciputra and Taman Bacaan Pelangi will transpire in the near future.
